Nigerian-Made Refrigerators, Freezers Debut at the Trade Fair (Posted 10th Nov, 2001)

One of the major highlights and revelation at the ongoing Lagos International Trade Fair is the introduction of locally manufactured refrigerators and freezer into the Nigerian market. Our correspondent reports that the manufacturer, Dan Ultimate Industries based
in Ibadan, have eight different ice block machines, four types of cold room, 12 model of deep freezer and refrigerators, and five different bottle coolers on display. Prices of these products range from N30,000 to 65,000.

According to the Chairman and Managing Director of the company, Dr. Idowu Asaju, a British trained engineer, he expressed optimism on the project, saying with the recent clamp down on imported fairly used refrigerators and accessories by the federal
government, their project will see the light of the day. In his closing remark, he solicited for government, corporate and individual support for the project to be a going concern. He remarked, "...this is made in Nigeria for Nigerians".

On another note, the official closing ceremony will be performed tomorrow at 11.00a.m. A cross section of visitors interviewed said they wished the fair could continue beyond the Nov 11 closing date.

For the over 380 participants drawn from the various key sectors of the economy; financial, oil and gas, manufacturing, automotive, engineering, general trade business, the need to convince consumers and clients that years of sustained investments in areas of research and development (R&D) and innovative products and services development has become more imperative than ever, especially in the area of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises. These have left no one in doubt about their determination to create the necessary awareness for their goods and services at the this event and beyond.

As tomorrow draws near, both local and foreign exhibitors are counting their gains for participating at this annual event and appear to have no regrets for participating at the fair. A cross section of exhibitors interviewed signified their willingness to participate
in subsequent editions, they are added that they are satisfied with the level of organisation and co-ordination put in place by the organisers. One of the foreign exhibitors attached to the German stand, expressed satisfaction at this year's fair.

However, the exhibitors explained the reason behind their use of various communication and marketing strategies for creating awareness for their products. These strategies varied from one exhibitor to another. For instances, mascots, music and cultural display were employed to attract visitors to stands.

Another major tool being employed by exhibitors at the fair ground is the use of free gift, free services, and discount facility to attract visitors. According to a staff of a cosmetics and body care products manufacturing company, it embarked on the use of free hair service for any customer who comes to its stand to create awareness for a new hair relaxer cream they launched into the market. This gesture will give the visitor first hand opportunity to feel and know how the product works.
