The National Assembly may soon pass a law to enable Nigeria take full advantage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, AGOA, of the United States. This was disclosed by Rita Whittaker, US Assistant Trade Representative while rounding off her visit to Nigeria recently. She said such a law would make it easier for Nigeria to export textiles and apparels to the US, which has provided incentives such as duty-free and tax exemptions for such items. The bill for this law is already before the National Assembly in Abuja, she said. She also said the US was looking to spend $4 billion to boost trade with Africa, adding "we want Nigeria to benefit".

But she said Nigeria would have to have "WTO-complaint laws" in order to benefit. She also criticised the country's high tariffs which she described as a" disincentive to growth" she stressed that under AGOA, 7,000 to 8,000 items can now enter the US from Africa, duty free.
