|History of SmartCard
The Smart Card Expo clocks two this year
after its maiden edition last year which was unarguably a huge success.
The idea came according to Miss Susan Okungbowa, head of Intermarc
Consulting Limited, the organisers of the Expo primarily to promote
electronic payment systems in Nigeria. ValuCard Nigeria Limited introduced
smart card form of payment to the country in 1999. But, the acceptability
was dismal, as many Nigerians still preferred to carry cash for
transactions. All efforts by the organisation showed little results and
many banks were becoming sceptical about the success of such a payment
facility in Nigeria.
How do you then convince high volume buyers
to carry debit (smart) cards which are safer and more convenient? How do
you build the card culture as evident in more developed societies? What
knowledge does the average Nigerian has about card facility? The answer to
these questions is the story of Smart Card Expo 2001, an annual
International Conference and Exhibition that brought together card
operators and would-be card users in a user friendly environment where
experiences from other successful countries are shared and the technology
behind Cards are made bare.
The 2002 edition is billed to be a major
crowd puller as both government and the private sector are set to make the
event a mega-success.
